What is thixomoulding?

Dynathixo is an advanced semi-solid metal casting technology developed by Dynacast together with TPI, blending traditional thixomoulding with our cold chamber process. Thixomoulding magnesium, also known as magnesium injection moulding, has long been used in industries such as consumer electronics and e-bikes, and this innovative variation expands Dynacast's ability to provide high-performance magnesium solutions across a broader range of sectors. Dynathixo ensures superior quality and durability in magnesium components, offering a more efficient and innovative solution for industry leaders seeking optimised parts.

Thixomoulding vs. Dynathixo

Thixomoulding uses solid chips that are compressed, heated and mixed into a semi-solid material before being injected into the die with the extruder.

Dynathixo combines Dynacast’s cold chamber process with a thixomoulding extruder to mix solid chips in the pressure chamber, using a cold chamber plunger and hydraulic system for robust operation.

Inside the Dynathixo process

The Dynathixo process involves feeding magnesium alloy chips into a heating chamber where they are mechanically processed and sheared by a rotating screw inside a barrel, transforming them from a dendritic to a globular state. The semi-solid material is then injected into a preheated mould under high pressure, enabling thinner walls and lower porosity.

Engineered by Dynacast for optimal quality and efficiency

The Dynathixo machine delivers superior material properties, lower energy consumption, reduced CO2 emissions, longer tool life and less waste compared with die casting magnesium using a standard cold chamber machine.

Achieve superior quality with Dynathixo

Dynathixo helps prevent air entrapment, resulting in thinner walls, improved flow and reduced wear on the sleeve and plunger.

A sustainable solution

The Dynathixo process optimises energy efficiency by heating the material at a lower temperature and eliminates the need for inert gases, reducing both energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Additionally, since the Dynathixo machine only requires a nozzle tip, it achieves an excellent shot weight ratio without the need for a tablet rest.
